Preserving Our Built Heritage

Sowing the seeds for Hong Kong’s cityscape tomorrow

The Hong Kong Community Heritage Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that advocates for more proactive preservation and sustainable adaptive reuse of heritage architecture in Hong Kong.

We feel a strong sense of responsibility to preserve our built heritage so that our future generations may enjoy them. We initiate meaningful action to conserve and utilize historic architecture. We step in to offer help to heritage architecture owners. We connect with likeminded organizations around the globe to share and transfer knowhow with each other. All these approaches serve to advance the cause of heritage conservation, as a gift that current generations leave for the future.

Our Track Record

Members of our team have been involved in advocating the protection and conservation of various historic buildings in Hong Kong, both before and since the establishment of HKCHF.

Save Our State

The State Theatre in North Point is one of the last remaining gems from the glorious days of Hong Kong’s movie industry. We successfully organized a heritage conservation campaign that calls for the preservation of the theatre building, which features distinctive architectural features such as the parabola-shaped arches on its top. It was due to our lobbying that the Antiquities Advisory Board decided to upgrade the theatre’s Historic Building Status from Grade 3 to Grade 1. This project demonstrates our professionalism in consultancy and advocacy works. Click here for more information.

Corner tong lau awareness campaign

The distinctive corner tenement houses (tong lau) are at the brink of extinction. In 2019, one of the last surviving examples, 301 and 303 Castle Peak Road in Cheung Sha Wan, faced the threat of demolition as its owner planned to redevelop it. HKCHF organized a series of events such as seminars and walking tours to raise the public’s awareness of the conservation of tenement houses.
